Grupo Abril's History

Quality, tradition and innovation are the basis of the new brand of Grupo Abril


In 2004, Grupo Abril acquired publishing houses Ática and Scipione, which already had at the time a long history of tradition and were pioneers in Brazil's market of educational books.


In the years that followed, an operation for integration of the history of success of the publishing houses with the experience, philosophy and working way of Grupo Abril began.


In 2008, Grupo Abril decided to prepare Ática and Scipione for the future, leading them to an even higher level. The group allocated resources and talented professionals in a careful preparation for restructuring of this group's business.


In early 2009, publishing houses Ática and Scipione and the newly-launched teaching method SER were incorporated into Abril Educação, which was created to influence and improve the quality of education offered in the country.


Certain in the knowledge that it is in the classroom that you transform the country, in 2009, Abril Educação created a Teacher Training division. The purpose of this new sector was to contribute to improving qualifications of teachers in Brazil.


Furthermore, due to easier access to computers and the internet, and believing that technology is a powerful tool for the learning process, Abril Educação reinforced its investments in the area of Teaching technology.


As a result of the investments made to further improve the quality of the portfolio of products and to reach Brazilian teachers, in 2010 Abril Educação recovered the leading position in the market of textbooks. This year, 57 million books published by Ática and Scipione and from the SER Teaching Method will be in Brazilian classrooms, with 60% of Brazilian pupils using these books.


In July 2010, Abril Educação acquired Anglo, one of most traditional and established educational groups in the country. The deal involved Sistema Anglo de Ensino (Anglo Teaching Method), Anglo Vestibulares (Anglo´s preparatory course for university entrance examinations) and SIGA, a company providing courses to prepare students to take the entrance examination for jobs in the government.
